Our Swiss-Type Screw Machines Offer the Precision and High Tolerances Needed for the Medical Industry

Our Swiss-Type CNC Screw Machines Offer the Precision and Tight Tolerances Needed for the Medical Industry

Stone Medical’s Swiss-type screw machines are far superior to conventional lathes and the best option for the manufacture of small medical device parts. In a Swiss-type screw machine, the headstock contains a component (collet) that clamps the material. The material is then fed through a guide bushing, usually made of carbide, which is custom-adjusted to each project—loose enough so the material can slide smoothly through it, but tight enough to keep the material from flexing away from the cutting tool.

This guide bushing is what separates Swiss-Type screw machines from conventional lathes. It allows Swiss-type machines to maintain very tight tolerances in relation to part diameter—even over long lengths—a plus or minus .0001″ kind of precision.

Swiss CNC machining is different from common cam screw machines, which make part shapes by creating a form tool with the shape of the part feature contained right in the tool. Swiss machines differ by generating the required features of the part by moving the material and the tool simultaneously, making for a vastly more efficient process, while maintaining accuracy and quality.
